What is the procedure

Knee is the largest joint in body and one is of the most complex part. Therefore it is important to consult the doctor/surgeon if you notice symptoms of knee pain. The doctor / surgeon will recommend knee arthroscopy if the painful condition is not responding to nonsurgical treatment such as rest, physical therapy, and medications or injections. It is recommend to get a general health assess before your surgery so that if there are certain health risks, a more extensive evaluation could be done before your surgery.

The actual surgery time usually last about 30 minutes and if extensive work is needed, the procedure , might last upto 45 minutes. Arthroscopy can be performed under local, regional, or general anesthesia and most people “go to sleep completely” during surgery with a general anesthetic.

The Surgeon makes three or four small incisions to allow special instruments, including a fiber-optic camera called as Arthroscope, into your joints. The camera displays pictures on a monitor, and your surgeon uses these images to guide miniature surgical instruments. To provide a clear view for the surgeon, sterile saline is brought into the joint continuously with tubing.

Torn parts of the meniscus and/or damaged cartilage on the bone surfaces are carefully removed with special arthroscopic instruments and the surgeon may close incision with a stitch or steri-strips, and then cover your joint with a soft bandage.The complication rate after arthroscopic surgery is very low and the end result is a knee lined with smooth and stable tissues rather than rough edges.
