Diabetes is a disease that causes high blood sugar in the body. The hormone insulin is used to move sugar(glucose) in the cells of our body that helps to produce energy. But in diabetes, the body doesn’t produce insulin or respond to the production of insulin.
People are often confused between type 1 & 2 diabetes as they have quite a few things in common but at the same time are different than each other.
Type 1 diabetes also known as Insulin-dependent diabetes is a condition in which the immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells that result in no energy production in the cells. It is often seen in children and young adults, but it can happen later in life. Type 1 diabetes escalates quickly.
Type 2 diabetes also known as Non-Insulin dependent diabetes is a condition in which the body is not able to produce insulin in the proper manner. This is called insulin resistance. In later stages of Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas can produce less, or no insulin known as Insulin deficiency. Type 2 is hereditary and can also be because of weight issues.
Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented whereas the risk of Type 2 diabetes can be reduced by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exercising regularly. Both are chronic diseases and increases the risk of various complications in the body.
The only treatment for Type 1 insulin is to Inject insulin through injections or infused using the pump. Type 2 can be managed in the early stages through various diets, self-monitoring glucose, and also exercising regularly.
Diet is an important part of diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes have to keep an eye on their diet, consumption of certain foods may require a higher intake of insulin. Have a talk with your doctor to understand these things in detail. Type 2 people are generally asked to follow a low-calorie diet and reduce the consumption of meat and junk foods.
It is important to have a thorough knowledge of the disease and to consider each and every detail explained by the doctor and take good care of yourself.
