Ligament Tear Surgery

About the process:

It is a process of reconstruction of ligaments using grafts to replace the ligament. Auto grafts are the most common grafts which uses part of your own body. The repair surgery is typically used only in cases where the ligament and a piece of bone gets separated from the rest of the bone.

What is the procedure

Ligament Tear Surgery

The ligament surgery is usually done by making small incisions in the knee and inserting instruments for surgery through these incisions (arthroscopic surgery). However in some cases, it is done by cutting a large incision in the knee (open surgery). Arthroscopic surgery is used by many orthopedic surgeons rather than open surgery for Ligament injuries because it is easy to see and work on the knee structures and it uses smaller incisions than open surgery. Arthroscopic surgery may have fewer risks than open surgery.

During arthroscopic ligament reconstruction, the surgeon makes several small incisions-usually two or three-around the knee and sterile saline (salt) solution is continuously pumped into the knee through one incision to expand it and to wash blood from the area allowing the doctor to see the knee structures more clearly. Surgical drills are inserted through other small incisions which drills small holes into the upper and lower leg bones where these bones come close together at the knee joint. The holes form tunnels through which the graft will be anchored. The graft is then secured with hardware such as screws or staples and the incisions are closed with stitches or tape.
